CAMBRIDGE - Yixuan Liu, in the first tournament she has ever played, has won the UK Open Riichi 2016 won with 131,800 points. There was a big gap to second place with 91,800 points for Timur Hahn, and Peter Langford close behind for third with 89,800. The tournament took place today at Cambridge.

There were four yakuman during the tournament, including a suu ankou (four concealed pungs) by Jonathan Harker, self-drawn while he was furiten, giving him the highest-scoring hanchan of the tournament.  Some of the luck was certainly also with Selina Steck, who managed to win a chiihou (Earthly Hand)! I can't say I've seen one of those before!

On the Saturday evening, twenty-six of the attendees enjoyed a three-course black tie dinner at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge.  A lot of wine was consumed, but no-one was late to the tournament the next day!  I imagine that is possibly the first black-tie dinner at an EMA tournament.
