ONLINE - The "International Online Riichi Mahjong Championship" ("IORMC") is an annual online competition organized by the 'Korean Mahjong League' ('KML') played on online riichi platform Tenhou.net. With over four million registered players, ranging from casual players to professionals, Tenhou.net is arguably the most popular online mahjong platform in the world.

Starting in 2011, the "IORMC" included only two competing national teams, but numbers have significantly increased (information on previous editions can be found here). In this year's edition sixteen teams from different countries are expected to compete, representing Austria, Canada, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the USA and Vietnam. Each team consists of four players. To ensure the best online players are being sent in representation of their respective countries, most participating countries organized qualifier tournaments. As to be expected the tournament is played using Tenhou’s standard rule set which include aka dora ('red fives'), starting-point totals of 25,000 per player (30,000 minus a 5,000 ante), and other subtle nuances.

Team and Individual Competition

The tournament consist of two events: the Team Competition (4 hanchan), which will be take place this upcoming Sunday, the 5th of November, and the Individual Competition, which is scheduled for the 19th of November. The sixteen highest scoring players in the Team Competition qualify for a seat in the Individual Competition, which will be a knockout tournament from quarterfinal to final.
