UPPSALA, Sweden - Veteran player Marco Montebelli from Italy wins the "Swedish Open MCR Championship" (MERS) scoring 20 table points and 451 mini points. Runner-up is "Best Swede" Emma Fahlström with 19 table points and 522 mini points, and in third comes French Astrid Dubedout scoring 17 table points and 141 mini points.

Many years ago the crew from Edewecht in Northern Germany created a tournament experience in order to attract both MCR and riichi players: the so-called 'double bill': two events back-to-back, one following MCR rules, the other the riichi rule set. Currently this concept has been picked up by several organizers; Annika Ridell and her crew from 'Uppsala Mahjong' hosted this year's seven sessions of the "Swedish Open MCR Championship" in conjunction with Stefan Persson's "Riichi At Midsummer" (June 18-23), a unique six-day mahjong event: fifteen sessions of riichi followed by a three-day excursion/tour of beautiful Sweden. Similar to the previous edition of the Uppsala competition for this year's iteration thirty-two players signed up representing Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Remarkable detail: the hosting club provided up-to-date ranking via an interactive tournament website constructed by resident IT specialist Christophe Avenel (scores manually added after each session). Since the tournament acted as a qualifier for MIL's upcoming "World Mahjong Sports Games" the four highest scoring players were awarded a seat in the MCR Individual Event.
