TEMSE, Belgium - One month after sealing third place at the Dutch "Valentine Tournament 2018" Belgian player Marieke Verheyden wins the tenth edition of the "Little 3 Dragons Tournament" aka the "MCR Belgian Open 2018" (MERS), scoring 13 table points and 371 mini-points. Runner-up is Dutch Pauline van der Linden with 12 table points and 414 mini-points, followed by her fellow countrywoman Leni Janssen who scored an equal amount of table points and 298 mini-points.

The crew from Temse is famous for being excellent hosts, and their “MCR Belgian Open” usually appeals to an impressive number of players: e.g. ninety-six competitors representing eight countries in 2017, and ninety-two players from seven different nationalities in 2016. However this edition the Van Damme family struggled to attract the large crowd they are used to: only thirty-six competitors from Belgium and neighbouring countries Germany and the Netherlands traveled to the pittoresque village of Temse. The explanation might be two-fold: unlike the previous editions which used to contain six sessions of the course of two days, this year’s tournament was a one-day event of four sessions. Furthermore there were two other MCR tournaments scheduled for the same weekend: the “MCR Copenhagen Open” and the first “Valencia MCR Tournament”. But none of this was an impediment to make this year's iteration another smashing success. Belgian player Marieke Verheyden redeemed herself: like the previous edition she was the highest scoring Belgian player, but this time her hard work put her on top of the ranking, a performance unmatched by any member in the history of the Belgian Mahjong Association. Peter Van Damme came tantalizing close in 2015, claiming second prize.
