AACHEN, Germany - Unstoppable French player Joe-Calberson Huynh takes first prize at the "Aachen Riichi Open" (RERS1) scoring 152,600 points, fellow 'Tri Nitro Tiles' club member Antoine Rossard comes in second with 120,600 points, and Dutch Nicole Haasbroek claims third position with 104,100 points.

Last weekend the third edition of the "Aachen Riichi Open" (RERS1) was held, and like previous editions, the tournament venue was the 'KHG Aachen' ('Katholische Hochschulgemeinde Aachen'), a stone's throw from the historic centre of the city. Hosted by mahjong club 'Maajanbu Aachen', but organized by Waldemar Laube, who acted as a non-playing referee, the tournament contained eight hanchan (sessions) played over the course of two days. Like the previous editions, the event attracted a great number of players from abroad, but it was the first time players from Great Britain, Czechia and Slovakia participated, and the first time the Germans were outnumbered by their visitors.

Musical chairs

The tournament got off to a flying start with a high and two lows in the second hanchan: French Olivier Cao scored a dealer yakuman (Suuankou) and two players got penalized with a chombo (noten riichi and furiten ron). The end of the day proved to be equally surprising when in the last session again two chombos were made. After hanchan 2 it was a game of musical chairs for British David Clarke, Slovakian Ondrej Bellay, and French Antoine Rossard who entered and dropped out the top 4 hanchan after hanchan. Only Dutch Nicole Haasbroek took a firm stand in the top 4. Winner Joe-Calberson Huynh had a slow start, but soon caught up, claiming the 4th place after hanchan 3. After hanchan 4, he took the top position, which he kept until the very end. It was not the first time Joe-Calberson Huynh participated in the Aaachen tournament: at the first edition in 2015 he was the runner-up, and in 2016 he crushed the competition, taking first prize.
