During traditional Sunday mahjong game at Baker Street 221 B, and after declaring "Hu," Lestrade started to list his fans.

"How interesting, Holmes," said Watson. "I see that one specific tile enters many fans."

"Yes, you are right, Watson," answered Holmes. "I would say there are two types of "entries" -- let's call it with this word. The tile may enter fan as a constituent part like in "Pure Double Chow" or "Tile Hog". Alternatively, some fan may apply to the whole hand like in "All Green" or "All Pungs". That entry may be considered as indirect."

"Anyway, what is the maximum number of entries for one tile into a winning hand?" questioned Mrs. Hudson.

Question: Please, provide a hand and a tile which enters as many fans for this hand as possible, either directly or indirectly.

Note: Two to four entries will be scored for , five to seven entries will be scored for , eight or above entries will be scored for .

I'm puzzled by the question/scoring: we must find the maximum height times!? By definition there can be only one maximum.
Or can we just submit whatever hands?

    Hi Vitaly,

The following hand in one suit with the 2 tile to enter in the following 8 fans, in case there are already 3 2-tiles on the table and it is the last discard:

    Last tile
    Last tile claim
    Closed wait
    All chows
    Straight
    Full flush

    Consider the following hand.

    111d 123d 111b 123b 11c

We consider 1b (or 1d) in this hand; this gives 8 entries, 5 direct and 3 indirect.

Direct: Mixed Double Chow, Terminal Pung, Double Pung, Two Concealed Pungs, Tile Hog
Indirect: Lower Tiles, Outside Hand, No Honors

  • Recall the top-scoring seven pairs hand from mystery #5: 22444466668888 bamboo with the fans all green, seven pairs, full flush, reversible tiles, last tile draw, fully concealed hand, tile hog (thrice), and all simples. If the winning tile is 4, 6 or 8, then it enters each of the eight listed fan types.

    Third time's the charm?

    456d 456d 456b 456b 55b

Consider a 5b tile in one of the 456b Chows.

Direct: Mixed Double Chow, Pure Double Chow, Tile Hog
Indirect: All Chows, All Simples, All Fives, Middle Tiles, Voided Suit

  • Guest - Jinbi Jin

    Concealed Kongs: 1111d 2222d
    Melded Kong: 3333d

Consider 1d. We get 5 direct entries, and 3 indirect ones.

Direct: Three Kongs, Three Concealed Pungs, Two Concealed Kongs, Terminal Pung, Pure Shifted Pungs
Indirect: Full Flush, Reversible Tiles, All Pungs

    Hello,

We can consider the following hand:
    - melded chows 234 dot, 456 dot, 456 dot
    - concealed tiles: 35 dot, 88 dot
Winning on 4 dot last tile draw.

Therefore, we can count the following fans:
    - Full Flush (24pts)
    - Pure Shifted Chows 234,345,456 (16pts)
    - Last Tile Draw (8pts)
    - Last Tile (4pts)
    - Tile Hog (2pts)
    - All Simples (2pts)
    - All Chows (2pts)
    - Pure Double Chow 456 (1pt), however, the winning tile 4d does not make this fan enter
    - Closed Wait (1pt)

With this hand, the 4d makes 8 fans enter ! I'm pretty sure there are other hands, but this is the one I can easily think of.

    Cheers,
    Anh-Vu

  • Guest - Anh-Vu Tran

If you take the last hand I submitted and shift all tiles 2-6 dots to 1-5 dots, you remove All Simples fan, but you can count Reversible Tiles fan !
Same number of fans, but 6 extra fan points !
