Lila Weitz showing off a recent catch in the latest hunt, a collectible mahjong set from the early 1900's.

MONTREAL, Canada - A big mahjong "Hello" from North America. My name is Allan Weitz from Montreal, Canada. For the last twenty years my wife Lila and I have been collecting all things from the world of Mahjong. We would like to thank Scott Miller and Martin Rep for the opportunity to share our experiences with you.

Most stories revolve around the five W’s. WHY-WHEN-WHERE-WHO-and WHAT. I have briefly answered the WHO above, so let us continue with WHERE. Where to search for mahjong sets and related items? Our prime source of WHERE is eBay. Another excellent source is Antique shows and markets. The mother of antique shows in eastern North America occurs yearly in May, July, and September in the small village in central Massachusetts named Brimfield, and the show is called The Brimfield Antique and Collectibles Show. This show, started in 1958, runs for six days in May, July, and again in September, and features about twenty-one different outdoor venues representing about four thousand dealers. Both dealers and buyers come from all over the world.

Lila and I attend in May and September. We require three full day to cover the entire show. This year marks our twentieth anniversary at Brimfield, and in these years we have purchased over two hundred sets during our excursions. Our last trip started September 4th and ended on the 7th. We came home with seven new mahjong sets. There is a certain thrill and adventure to antiquing that is best described as “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat".
